Pretty Bowtique Giveaway!

If you have ever read my maternity fashion blog post or follow me on Instagram, you will know that I am obsessed with a good accessory. So much so in fact that I have teamed up with the lovely Danielle from Pretty Bowtique to share my current obsession!

I first spotted her store on her Instagram feed of extremely adorable kids' hair bows, clips and even baby moccasins. (FYI ordered mine today already) This lead to me stalking her website and even having the ladies in the office help me make the hard choice of not buying everything on the site. Biggest appeal to me what that not only are they great quality, meet the 'Laura-price-range-criteria' but she also provides flat rate international shipping of only $10 no matter how big the order and no matter where in the world.

My Pregnancy Diet

I get asked quite frequently if I'm careful with what I eat or it is sometimes assumed I lead a very healthy lifestyle based on the appearance of lack of excess fat I have put on during this pregnancy. Similar to how I was before I was pregnant, I just try to eat good things and be active in relation to how much energy I have. To me this means less processed carbs like white bread, pasta, fried foods and excess butter. I didn't see the point that just because I was pregnant, I now needed to indulge on bad foods. With that being said, if I feel like a pluto pup by god I will have one. I don't deprive myself of anything especially being pregnant but I do choose the good things to nourish little bub over the bad.

Oh, and my mother gave me great genes.

This isn't going to be a rant about good nutrition, exercise or what you should or shouldn't eat during pregnancy. I really don't care about the issue all that much and each to their own but I did want to share my own pregnancy diet experience as it seems to be somewhat of a curiosity.

Breakfast
During the week I tend to stick to transportable meals or ones that I can prepare the night before and serve easily at my desk at work at about 8am. This means either a mixed fruit platter, some omelette/scrambled eggs (Just the ingredients; I mix and microwave at work), or asparagus on toast with cheese and ham. Normally a huge milky decaf coffee will accompany whatever I have. Breakfast normally fills me for two hours before I'm sniffing around for a little snack.

Lunch
Like breakfast, I pre-make my lunch the night before so I'm not rushing around in the morning. A typical lunch during the week would be a salad or left overs from dinner the night before.
My salads are full of protein and good carbs. This means chicken breast dry fried in spices or marinades with a plethora of various veggies or another type of meat like tuna, beef or turkey.

If I am lazy, then its McDonalds! Hold up... it's not what you're thinking. McDonalds actually serve an extremely healthy grilled chicken salad! Its called the warm chicken salad with grilled chicken and sesame soy dressing. Salad in Question's nutrition information found here.

Dinner
Because I have more time of an evening to prepare, I like to mix it up with dinner. Its usually some form of meat protein (steak, chicken, fish or pork) with either a bunch of veggies or salad done with a prawn sauce or home made sweet potato fries. I do love to make my own homemade pizzas, soup or stir fries but with pregnancy, it's really whatever I can stomach and whatever I feel like. So vegemite toast wins a lot too.

Snacks
Normally I would have a morning snack and an afternoon snack. Sometimes all I will do is snack, but pending morning sickness, I like to have something about 10:30am then something again at about 2:30pm. I like to think my snacks are primarily healthy when I have things like rice crackers, a piece of fruit or a little zip lock bag of cereal like Unlcle Toby's 'Plus' range, but a lot of the time its a muffin, a cookie or a piece of cake with a decaf tea in the morning and I allow myself a small cup of caffeine-filled coffee of an afternoon. I don't bother with caffeine on the weekends because I'll just nap instead.

Cravings & Aversions
I haven't had any outrageous or weird cravings but there have been a few things that have stood out to me.

During my first trimester all I wanted was tuna. Tuna, mayo, pickles and sweet chilli sauce with lots of white pepper. At least once a day. I couldn't however, eat any beef or pork products. Even the smell of them would turn me off.

The second trimester brought back the joy of steaks but funnily enough, I have not touched tuna since about week 14. Also, before I knew my iron was low, I went an entire week of just enormous steaks for breakfast lunch and dinner. I'm good now.

Third trimester I call my chicken trimester. Chicken Salads, chicken stir fries, chicken soups, chicken omelettes; chicken stuffed with chicken if I could.

I hope this has quenched some of your questions but if you have any more or if you would like any recipes of any of the meals mentioned above, just let me know!

What's In My Hospital Bag?

When I finally decided to man up and put together my hospital bag I had zero clues on what I would need and of how much. Of course my first point of contact would be Google, but I had to consider my chosen care plan and after birth care plan when making the list.

I may point out now that I have no set birth plan per-say. Me, hubby and my midwife have decided to just go with the flow pretty much. And I plan on having the majority of pre-labour at home. Also, I may need to mention that I have chosen to be discharged from the hospital a few hours after giving birth if all goes well (meaning bub is healthy, I am healthy, bub has had her first successful feed and the hospital is happy to let me leave) and will have my care in-home with my midwife travelling to my house each day.

I mentioned these things because this will affect what goes in my bag as I am not planning on being there overnight/extended stay. If, for any reason I am, hubby and I have a contingency plan. Don't worry.

So Google found me bunch of really unhelpful sites which I wont bother with cause they must have been written in the 50's with items like 'camera and extra roll of film & spare change for pay phone', but a few quite good ones I incorporated into my own tailored list are linked below:

My List

For Bub
  - Two singlets and two newborn onesies/going home outfit
  - Four nappies
  - Two swaddles
  - A baby blanket
  - Packet of wet wipes
  - Pair of Socks

For Me
  - Medical Records
  - Six breast pads
  - An extra nursing bra - I'll probably already be wearing one
  - Four pairs of underwear - cheap ones. They aren't making it back from the hospital
  - A cheap and comfy mu-mu
  - Slippers - $9 kmart ones that also won't make it back from the hospital
  - A pair of Socks
 - Toiletries - Travel sized shower gel, deodorant, shampoo & conditioner, lip balm, hand cream, panadol, hair ties, face wipes and toothbrush and toothpaste.
  - Makeup - Basically just tinted moisturizer and mascara for when I leave the hospital.
  - Going home outfit
  - Maternity Pads
  - Face Washer

For Our Sanity
  - iPhone charger and of course our iPhones - which double as music, entertainment (Foxtel GO, Facebook & Games), camera, communication and a throwing device.
  - Snacks - Beef Jerky, Crackers, Lollies, Gatorade, Water and cash for whatever reason.
  - Hubby's swim suit - in case he needs to get in the bath or shower with me. The midwife has made it clear; naked pregnant lady = OK, naked husband = NOT OK

I also want to make the packing experience for others easier and less time consuming than it was for myself so I have created a generic list template of things you may like to include your your own list. It's downloadable and you can add extra items and interpret how much of each item you'll need based on your own birth and care plan.

Just Another Blog

Everyone either already has a blog or is thinking about starting a blog. I used to think they were time consuming, difficult to set up (if you're me), you get criticism from every angle and most of the time no one really reads it so you're basically writing into the webbernet abyss.

I decided to make my own page after recently being asked by a blogger friend to write a guest post on her page about my maternity style/fashion. I had the best experience and it was very satisfying to have something so mundane about yourself to be appreciated by others. It took me back to the days of assignment writing in school; hunkering down for hours writing and rewriting, frustrations, epiphanies, spell check, proof reading and then stand
ing back at the end, pointing to it and saying, 'I made this.'

I guess now I want to belong to that mummy-blogging-community where each share's their trials, joys, life-hacks and hopefully help someone else out along the way. I love reading others' blogs and am always using their ideas to improve my own situation whatever that may be.

So hopefully there's something here that you like but it not, I'm having fun typing either way.
